Daniel Smutny is considered one of the most interesting and promising young composers in Germany today.
Being a pupil he already won several first prizes for his first compositions such as "Schüler Komponieren" and attended the "Education and Talent" academy (1994). He left school with early graduation and studied with Hans Zender and Bernhard Kontarsky in Frankfurt. In 1997 and 1998 he won prizes from the Ensemble Modern Forum and the renowned "Stuttgart Composition Prize". In 2000 he won the scholarship from the "Darmstädter Ferienkurse", the composition prize from the "Biennale Neue Musik" and got commissioned to write a work for Stuttgart Opera. In 2002 and 2003 he won composition scholarships from "Heinrich Strobel Foundation" (SWR) and "Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg", the Busoni-Prize from the "Akademie der Künste" Berlin, the BMW composition prize and a scholarship from Heinrich Strobel Studio. In 2004 he premiered at "Donaueschinger Musiktage" and "musica viva" (BR Munich), was in 2005 Fellow of the Villa-Aurora Foundation Los-Angeles and premiered in the U.S. in a portrait recital in Roy O.Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles). Smutny gets commissioned by renowned organisations, ensembles and concert houses like "Gewandhaus Leipzig (MDR)", "Klangforum Wien", Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, European Center of the Arts, SWR-Vokalensemble, SWR-Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden/Freiburg, "musica viva" (Munich). In 2010 he was commisioned to write a full opera for Hellerau Festival Hall ("Ferne Nähe", première oct. 2011). In 2012 he founded "sinwald", a three-day festival in commission for Central German Broadcasting (MDR).
All of Smutny´s works are published exclusivly by "Internationale Musikverlage Hans Sikorski".
